About

A project exploring masculinity through handwriting

WHAT IS A

MAN ?

Welcome to the ‘notes on men’ project!

This project poses a question on masculinity, asking people to consider what is a man.

To answer this question, people of all ages and walks of life are encouraged to write down their answer by hand on a sheet of paper.

The question is very open; answers can be as brief as a word or as detailed as the page allows… Answers can be in the form of a picture, or the page can be left blank.

Please feel free to be as creative as you would like. There are no wrong answers. The responses are collected anonymously.

Thank you for taking part!

Sincerely,

from James,
the creator of this project.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR / CREATOR OF THE PROJECT

James D’Ambrosio (he/they) was born in the UK in 1995. Growing up, he had ginger hair and he lived in England, France, Italy, Ireland and London.

He studied engineering at university. There, he spent a lot of time talking to people and wandering around the streets of Dublin. Since graduating, he works as a structural engineer, encouraging people to use environmentally sound materials such as straw, timber and stone. Deep down he is an artist. Hopefully he will realise that again someday.

James has received much kindness and grace from many people around him over the years.

He likes daisies, rugby, the Lord of The Rings, walking, and listening to people’s stories.

He has an impressive ability to not keep any sort of permanent routine despite consistent efforts, and often stays awake all night to work on projects that rarely get finished… The list of unfinished projects is long and gets longer and longer as time goes on.

He now lives in Kernow, close enough to his Celtic roots, within singing distance from the sea.

He does not have a castle, nor does he have much hair left on his head, but he is a human being with flaws, qualities & quirks, and he does try to help people.
